Brooks was elected as the Member of Parliament for Braintree in May 2005, gaining the seat from Labour. He was appointed as an Opposition Whip in July 2007. He has served on the Treasury Select Committee and Science and Technology Select Committee. His interests are foreign affairs, economic policy, special needs education, and women’s issues. Brooks is co-Chairman of the Conservative Women2Win Campaign.
Brooks Newmark is an active member of his local community and has been involved in a number of successful campaigns, including fighting for the new Community Hospital for Braintree. He continually presses the government over road safety on the A12, and raises concerns about vehicle safety issues. He works for better rail link services for Braintree and Kelvedon, and supports the Cressing A120 Action Group. Brooks opposes the expansion of Stansted and continues to support rural post offices under threat from closure. He has helped a number of children’s charities including Get Kids Going!, Children in Need and Farleigh Hospice. He lives in the heart of the constituency and supports efforts to foster a vibrant rural economy.
Brooks was born in the US, and came to the UK aged 9. He was educated at Bedford School for boys, and then went onto Harvard (BA History and MBA Finance) and Oxford (politics postgraduate research). Prior to entering Parliament, Brooks worked in the financial investment sector. He is a keen Newcastle United supporter and enjoys skiing and long distance running.
